Barcelona - introduction

Barcelona

Barcelona is not only the capital city of Catalonia but also the second biggest city in Spain with the population of 1.7 million. The city lies on the northeastern coast of the Iberian Peninsula and stretches to the Mediterranean shore.

Thanks to its long and fascinating history, Barcelona has a lot to offer to everyone. It is a city that is sought out by lovers of history and monuments who can admire a wide variety of architectonical styles there, ranging from Romanesque chapels to Modern buildings. But it is famous mainly for Art-Nouveau buildings designed by Antonio Gaudí, the most famous architect of Catalan Modernisme. Barcelona is also suitable for those who seek entertainment and night life as there are many bars, night clubs, fairgrounds and modern sports facilities (the city housed the Summer Olympic Games in 1992).
